Game Recaps

GAME OF THE DAY #1

Lenawee Christian shows to be too much for Bay City John Glenn

Lenawee Christian – 53 / John Glenn - 38
The score does not tell the true story of this game, for it was truly a battle until the end. The first half was filled with both teams trying to find their rhythm and fighting against turnovers. Led by the dynamic duo of the Salenbien sisters, Bree (2021) and Dani (2020), Lenawee held tight to a 26-19 at the half.

In the third quarter, John Glenn showed their resiliency and toughness. They played hard every possession, never backing down, along with getting some big buckets from sophomore guard Carly McCrum and senior guard Lakeyn Couture. Their hard work was paying off as they were able to cut their deficit down to 4. However, with Bree Salenbien on the court, anything can happen and it did. In the fourth quarter, Bree was directly or indirectly responsible for 10 of Lenawee’s last 17 points, a run that John Glenn could not match. Lenawee walks away victorious.
Scoring Leaders:  Lenawee: B. Salenbien 18, D. Salenbien & Anderson 10 / BC John Glenn: McCrum 16

GAME OF THE DAY #2

Detroit Edison prevails over Wayne Memorial, without Jackson in the lineup

Wayne Memorial – 62 / Detroit Edison - 74
A true battle of the best, both Wayne Memorial and Edison expected to leave the gym with a win. In a packed gym, in front of a very high energy crowd, each team took turns making impressive defensive stops and spectacular offensive moves. 2021 guard Damiya Hagemann was the go-to player for Edison early in the game. She was everything they needed on both ends of the court. However, junior wing Shaulana Wagner is the player that got the Lady Pioneers’ engines really going, coming off the bench and being a tremendous force. Right before the first half ended, Wagner scored 6 back to back points and earned 2 assist, giving Edison a 37-29 lead at halftime.

Wayne Memorial was not shaken at all by Edison’s run. They started the second half off with a steal and layup from 2019 Illinois commit
Jeanae Terry and a big shot from South Carolina State commit Jayah Hicks. Several times throughout the third quarter, Wayne cut their deficit down to 2 points, partially due to the sweat and hard work of senior Sammiyah Hoskins. As hard as they fought, the lead never would belong to them. With 1:50 left in the third quarter, both Jeanae Terry and Makailah Zeigler-Griggs got their fourth foul, hurting the Lady Zebras both offensively and defensively. Terry would eventually foul out with a little over four minutes left in the game. Junior guard Gabrielle Elliott took over for Edison in the final quarter to help her team close out the game and earn the win.
Scoring Leaders:
Wayne: Hoskins 16, Hicks & Terry 15 / Detroit Edison:  Elliott 24, Hageman 23

MOTOR CITY ROUNDBALL CLASSIC – DAY 3

Detroit Renaissance activates the running clock in win over Chicago Hope Academy

Gary Comer - 22 / Renaissance – 62
The Lady Phoenix came out the gate running and never looked back. Their defensive pressure early in the game proved to overwhelm Hope Academy who constantly struggled to get shots up, let alone score. Towards the end of the second quarter, Hope Academy began to show some life, but their deficit had already reached the 20-point margin. They were only able to score a total of 12 points in the half.

Renaissance started the third quarter the exact way they started the game, with back to back baskets from sophomore guard/wing Mikyah Finely and sophomore point guard Kailee Davis. The Phoenix continued to push the pedal to the floor, holding Hope Academy to only 10 points for the entire second half. They get the easy win.
Scoring Leaders: Gary Comer: Adams 7 / Renaissance: Finely 21, Davis 16

Long distance shooting helps Chandler Park Academy defeat Chicago Wendell Phillips

Wendell Phillips - 44 / Chandler Park – 68
Whether you prefer to say the roof is on fire or it’s raining in the gym, Chandler Park put on a three-point exhibition in the first half, sparked by back to back three’s from senior Anaya Kennedy and sophomore
Emaia O’Brien. Chandler Park knocked down 9 long-distance shots in the first half, a total of eleven for the game. They started the first quarter off on a 14-4 run but played every possession as though they were the ones down. Phillips got great looks at the basket from all over the court but could not convert. Despite getting great play from their senior point guard Taneil Robertson and wing Fantasia Williams, at halftime, they trailed 41-23.

Phillips opened the third quarter with three offensive rebounds, but four missed shots, all in the same possession. They continued to stay aggressive and attack the basket, often drawing the foul and hitting their free throws. Chandler Park also struggled offensively at the beginning of the third quarter, but they did not stop playing smoldering defense to create turnovers. They ended the quarter with an old fashion three-point play from 2021 Wing India Repress. The fourth quarter was as scrappy and gritty as they come. Both teams dove for loose balls, crashed the boards hard, created and took a lot of contact from each other. However, their aggressive play came too late for Phillips. Chandler Park leaves with the win.
Scoring Leaders: Phillips – Williams 15, Bradney 10 / Chandler Park – Walker 15, Kennedy 14
