LBI Event Recap: Best of Michigan Holiday Classic (Game Recaps)

Grosse Pointe South 72 Gabriel Richard 27
Grosse Point South jumped out to an early lead and Gabriel Richards just could not recover. Sydney Balan did what she could to get her team in the game, throwing great lead passes and getting to the rim, but it just wasn’t enough. Grosse Pointe South never let up and went home with the victory.
Scoring Leaders: Gabriel Richard - Balan 8 points, Grosse Pointe South – Downey & Wilson 12 points  

Detroit Renaissance 61 Arbor Prep 38

What many thought would be an exciting game that could possibly go down to the wire, resulted in a blowout for the Lady Phoenix of Detroit Renaissance. Arbor Prep got great looks but could not get the ball in the hoop. Renaissance took advantage of the situation and went on a 10-0 run, led by sophomore point guard Kailee Davis, and never looked back. The Lady Gators showed a few moments of hope but wasn’t able to get over the hump. Renaissance gets the victory.

Scoring Leaders: Arbor Prep – Petree 18 points, Renaissance – Davis 21 points

 

Midland Dow 55 Ann Arbor Huron 36

Both teams got off to a sluggish start, however, it took Huron much longer to shake it off. The Chargers stayed aggressive and eventually kicked into high gear, led by senior Maize Taylor who knocked down 4 3-pointers in the first half. The Smith Twins (Jaydn & Siena) lit a spark for Huron midway through the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough to slow down the fired up Midland Dow squad.

Scoring Leaders: Huron – Glenn 12 points,  Midland Dow – Davis 19 points

 

Southfield A&T 66 Flint Carman-Ainsworth 55

A high action game with high action players, this game was all that fans anticipated being. The first half belonged to the Cavaliers, as senior guard Destiny Strother and Junior Wing Aaliyah McQueen dominated in the lane and on the perimeter. Halfway through the third quarter, big buckets from Southfield’s Barnes, McEvans and Johnson changed the momentum and Southfield wet on a run to take the lead. Carman continued to fight but turnovers and fouls seemed to plague them. Southfield A&T gets the win.

Scoring Leaders: Carman-Ainsworth – Strother 24 points,  Southfield A&T – Johnson 20 points, Barnes 18 points

 

Jenison 42 South Bend Washington (IN) 28     

Both teams struggled to score in the beginning, playing tough defense and suffering from turnovers. Jenison picked it up in the middle of the second quarter and controlled the game from that point on. Lead by sophomore forward Ally Vantimmeren, Jenison played smothering defense and executed on offense. Washington continued Senior Danika Austin was the energy source for Jenison on defense, guarding every position on the court.

Scoring Leaders: South Bend Washington – Reynolds 11 points, Jenison – Vantimmeren 15 points

 

Columbus Northland (OH) 68 Detroit Country Day 61

 The first half of the game without a doubt belonged to Country Day. Everything seemed to be going in their favor. Shots were falling, players’ chemistry was clicking and at one point they had a 20 point lead. But then senior point guard Jasmine Powell got injured. Northland started to make their run. Early in the third quarter, forward Adrian Folk picked up her 4th foul, and it was all downhill for Country Day. Alexandria Hamilton, Northland’s senior point guard took over the game. Northland went on an 18-6 run, taking the lead, and pulling out the victory.

Scoring Leaders: Northland – Hamilton 36 points, Country Day – Novak 23 points

 

Toledo Rogers 80 East Kentwood 73

For the majority of the game, it was the Zia Cooke show. The South Carolina University commit quickly took control of the game and led Toledo Rogers on several runs, resulting in a 45-31 lead at halftime, with Cooke having 25 of those points. Kentwood did not wave the white flag. They fought their way out of a double-digit deficit, with senior guard Alona Blackwell and sophomore forward Kabriana Hallman leading the way. However, Rogers was just too quick and athletic to stop, and they win the game.

Scoring Leaders: Rogers – Cooke 43 points,  E. Kentwood – Blackwell 27 points

 

Wayne Memorial 63 Whitney Young 56

The first half of the game was definitely fast-paced and full of energy. Both teams struggled somewhat with turnovers, however, Wayne Memorial was able to get a nice lead going into halftime. The second half of the game belonged to Wayne Memorial, in particular, Janae Terry. Terry dominated on both ends of the floor, and no one could stop her. Whitney Young caught their second wind and went on a small run of their own. But it was not enough to stop the Lady Zebras, and they get the victory.

Scoring Leaders: Whitney Young – Jones 24 points,  Wayne Memorial – Terry 30 points

 

Columbus Africentric 65 Detroit Edison 60

The main event of the evening, a battle of the heavyweights, definitely lived up to all of the hype. Both teams loaded with high major Division I talent and it showed right away. They traded baskets the entire first half, with multiple lead changes. Three after three, layup after layup, steal after steal, and Africentric going into halftime with a 3 point lead. The second half started out in the exact same matter. There was a total of 5 lead changes in the third quarter alone. The fourth quarter proved to be a battle of the boards. The team that did the best job rebounding, was the team that scored and kept the lead. At 5:50 left in the game, Africentric went on 8-0 run and took the lead for good. After a timeout, a basket and foul from Mississippi State commit Rickea Jackson gave Edison a boost of energy and they went on a run. But missed free throws and turnovers came back to haunt them, and Africentric held on for the win.

Scoring Leaders: Africentric – Smith 22, Horston 14  points,  Edison – Hagemann 18 points, Jackson 14 points
