Bourbon, IN: On Saturday, September 8, Indiana fall weather took charge. The rain fell all day outside, making for a very wet and dreary afternoon. There was nothing dreary about what was going on inside Triton Central High, and the only thing that was wet was the jumpers from the players at the fourth annual Indiana Futures camp. Although all of these athletes haven’t even played a single high school game, several of these players stood out and rose above; here are some that caught my eye.

2023 5’8” Ashlynn Shade SG Noblesville HS
If you’re talking Indiana basketball, then you’re talking about good shooters. Ashlynn Shade is a player that will make you pay from all angles of the court. From behind the arc, off the dribble after using a screen, or in transition while stopping on a dime. She has such a refined and feathery jump shot that if you watch her long enough, you start to try and count her misses! So maybe you’re thinking to yourself, “how do I defend her then?” Well tiring out shooters and their legs is always a good choice. Not when you’re referring to Shade. Elite conditioning runs in her blood; her high octane motor will run you out of the gym! Although in middle school still, this player is ready for the big stage.

2022 5’11” Diana Burgher SF North Harrison HS
Having a player like Burgher on the perimeter at almost six feet tall is a welcomed sight for any coach. This player stretches the floor with her ability to shoot the ball with confidence. Her striking form on her release is something out of a magazine, with her shoulders perfectly squared and her wrist so crisply snapped. Shooting the ball with ease isn’t the only thing Diana does well. You can hear the I.Q. with every statement she makes on the court, from directing traffic on the break to acknowledging the effort made on loose balls. This freshman will make some noise this coming high school season.

2023 5’7” Olivia Brown SG Hamilton South Eastern HS
It goes without saying that Olivia has high-level skills, as she makes it to the finals of the Indiana Futures skills challenge. Her ability to create off the bounce, especially from the top of the key, made her exceptionally difficult to guard. Brown is able to draw the help and kick out to open shooters after continually beating her man. She possesses excellent energy on both ends of the court, putting pressure on the defense to stay in front while harassing the ball handler on the other end. Although her draw and kick game is good, she also can finish when she finds herself at the rim. The future is bright for this young lady!

2023 5’6” Rashunda Jones PG South Bend Washington HS
Don’t let her slight frame fool you; Jones has elite athletic abilities. This quiet player makes noise with her relentless attacks to the rim and tenacious on-ball defense as well. Her unassuming quickness allows her to find herself at the rim on throughout the game. Couple that with her capabilities to finish with either hand and you have yourself a big problem. Jones was able to not only create shots for herself but also for her teammates; a draw and kick or drive and dump down to the post was well within her game. To make matters worse for the opposing team, she has a developed jump shot as well. This South Bend native has tremendous upside and potential; she’s one to keep an eye out for!

2022 6’2” Mila Reynolds SF South Bend Washington HS
It was tough to take your eyes off Mila during the Indiana Futures camp on Saturday. Her versatility was king! She can create a mismatch no matter the defender because of her elite skill level. You can find Reynolds on the block showing off her footwork with a smooth up and under or on the perimeter knocking down threes while letting her man know, “you got to close out sooner than that!” Her confidence and leadership seemed to ooze wherever she went, while her effervescent personality dominated conversations. This fresh frosh possesses the rare ability to score from all three levels consistently. Her next level pull-up shot is seemingly unguardable. Combined with power and finesse down low, she will be a force to reckon with this coming season for the Panthers at South Bend Washington High School.
