Game one of the 4th annual Icebreaker Classic held at Ypsilanti Arbor Preparatory featured the Eagles of Chandler Park Academy and the Rams of Flat Rock High. Both teams opened up the game not being able to score on easy baskets, primarily due to the aggressive defense they both displayed.

Chandler Park’s poweroutlet came from Shatira Gaines, who crashed the boards and worked hard on offense, resulting in an old fashion three finish, and 10 points and 6 rebounds for herself in the first half. However Flat Rock was not waving the white flag and giving up. They went on a 12-4 run, including a nice three point shot from senior guard Paige Nemith. At halftime, the score was tied 21-21.

After the half the Eagles picked up where they left off. They went on a 10-0 run and looked more determined than ever. Flat Rock once again found themselves playing catch-up. The Rams fought hard on both ends of the court but never could get over the hump. The quickness and athleticism of Chandler Park was just a little too much for them. After an impressive run from the Rams, Chandler Park held on to claim the game.

Leading scorers for the night: Chandler Park: Gaines 12, Walker 11, Farrell 8, Williams 7; Flat Rock: Nemith 20, Vey 6, Cerroni 5

Game and Team Highlights

Chandler Park:

  • The Eagles were awesome on defense when they were focused. At times they allowed frustration from the offensive end affect their play. If they can keep that under control, they will have a fairly decent season.
  • Senior Shatira Gaines was a huge inside presence for her team. They dominated the boards for second chance shots when she was in the game.

Flat Rock:

  • Flat Rock waited a little too late to get their juices flowing and get their minds in the game. It will be important for them to come out of the locker fired up and ready to go if they want to have a successful season.
  • Point guard senior Paige Nemith had the hot hand all game. She not only knocked down 5 three point shots, but she was a steady floor leader for her team.
