It was senior night Tuesday night at Ann Arbor Huron High School where the River Rats (15-4) in the Southeastern Conference hosted the Haslett Vikings (14-4) of the CAAC.

This game would start out by honoring Senior Amaka Chikwe who was too injured to play the whole game but Haslett was gracious enough to let her get an uncontested layup before watching the rest of her final home game on the bench. Haslett was able to score an uncontested basket as well. After the ceremonial points, Huron’s defense would put on a clinic in the first half.  Haslett would not get a point after the ceremony which allowed the River Rats to have a quarter encompassing 12-0 run. That run would turn into a 22-2 run that ended late in the 2nd quarter. Part of that run consisted of back to back to back layups for Huron, the first by Junior Emily Marsh then two by Senior Cheah Rael-Whitsitt. After 1 the River Rats lead 14-2.

The bleeding would finally stop for Haslett as Senior Karson Tripp nailed a jump shot which would be their first contested points on the night. Later on in the quarter Senior Shannon Twichell would end Huron’s 22-2 run with another jump shot and the Vikings would manage a 7-2 run thanks to some foul trouble by Huron. The River Rats would still have a pretty sizable lead going into the half in part thanks to a buzzer beating triple by Sophomore Dani DiGiovine. At the half Huron led 29-9.

The Vikings would muster up some confidence in the 3rd thanks to a couple layups by Senior Megan Mowid. They would more than double their first half points in just over six minutes. The River Rats however were responding by getting lots of steals, something they did well all night and would continue to put on the points in the 3rd.  Among those were a layup and two triples by Junior Kara Wilson.  After 3 Huron would still lead 43-20.

After that, Haslett was ready for this one just to end. They only managed a triple by Freshman Hannah Homan as far as points go while Huron continued to dominate thanks to great scoring and rebounding by Rael-Whisitt and Wilson. Huron would cruise to victory on senior night 57-23 as they improve to 16-4 overall and Haslett falls to 14-5 overall.

“We played great defense tonight,” said Huron Head Coach Steve Vinson. “I thought we got off to a good start. Obviously we needed to make shots and that makes the game easier.”

Leading scorers on the night: Huron: Kara Wilson 12, Shamim Wambere 10, Cheah Rael-Whisitt 9.  Haslett: Megan Mowid 9, Shannon Twichell 6, Hannah Homan 3.
