Friday, February 5, 2016 was an important night for both teams. Canton went into the game 7-0 in the KLAA and Wayne Memorial went in 6-1, only losing to Canton in January. Wayne Memorial’s high octane offense got going right away scoring 17 points in the 1st quarter. Their suffocating defense also caused problems for Canton early on and it led one to believe that the game would be a run away for Wayne Memorial as they held Canton to six 1st quarter points. The second quarter belonged to Canton who finally started to get a rhythm on both ends of the court. They took advantage of Wayne Memorial turnovers and with 30 seconds left in the 1st half Canton cut the Wayne Memorial lead down to 3 points making the score 23-20. Then came Camree Clegg who made a 5 point run all by herself by hitting a big time 3 ball, stealing the inbounds pass, getting fouled and hitting 2 free throws.

In the second half things got more and more intense. Canton wouldn’t go away easy. They attempted to counter every punch that Wayne Memorial threw. With both teams going back and forth in the 3rd quarter it ended with a score of 40-36; Wayne leading the game. Midway through the 4th quarter Canton seemed poised to take the lead and win the game, however there was one problem. Her name is Camree’ Clegg. Every second half run that Canton put together was silenced by a Camree’ Clegg bucket; including four second half 3 balls. One shot was so deep I almost jump out of my seat to run on the court to give her a high five. Wayne Memorial’s defense and high powered offense proved to be too much for Canton this time. Wayne Memorial would go on to win the game 60-47, which ties them for 1st place with Canton High.

Brianna Finn came up big for Canton in the 2nd half scoring 12 of her team high 15 points. Camree Clegg and Jaenae Terry combined for 41 points, with Clegg leading all scorers with 28.

Game and Team Highlights

Canton:

• Canton rebounded from a slow start and fought hard till the end of the game.

• Canton’s outside shooting caused issues for Wayne memorial.

Wayne Memorial:

• Wayne Memorial Dominated the boards anchored by transfer Mya Garrett a.k.a. The New Sherriff. (15reb)

• This win makes gives them a tie with Canton for 1st place in the conference.
