Both teams came into tonight's matchup undefeated; Catholic Central at 12-0 and South Christian at 11-0.  Catholic posted wins over the pre-season #1 ranked class A team Southfield Lathrup, Wayland and Ann Arbor Huron, while South Christian boast wins over East Kentwood, Grand Rapids Christian and Wayland.  We figured the game would be a good one but no one could have anticipated this outcome.

In a completely packed house that included coaches from Central Michigan, Grand Valley State University and Davenport University, GR South Christian jumped out to an early 11-4 lead to force the game's first timeout with 4 min left in the first quarter.  The Sailors seemed to have more energy during the game, going after all the loose balls and controlling the boards early on.  As a team, South Christian shot the ball extremely well and finished the game impressively above 60% from the field.   Defensively, South Christian did an outstanding job of putting the clamps on an extremely talented GR Catholic squad.  The Cougars did not seem like themselves at all. They turned the ball over and really struggled on both ends of the floor.

Sophia Karasinski led GR Catholic Central with 21pts; Kyra Bussell chipped in 12pts. Jen Deboer finished with a game high 24 points and 7 assist, and Markayla Vander had an outstanding game as well finishing with 20 points and 8 rebounds for GR South Christian.

Game Highlights

Grand Rapids Catholic Central:

  • Catholic Central went on a run in the 3rd quarter cutting the lead to 10 at one point.
  • Catholic Central just seemed to be a step late defensively and could never equal South Christian’s energy on either end.

Grand Rapids South Christian:

  • The guard play of senior GVSU commit Jen Deboer was remarkable to say the least. As a leader she encouraged teammates, she was a strong facilitator and was hands down the best player on the floor tonight.
  • Markayla Vander forced turnovers, ran the floor and was physical under the basket.  She is one of the most underrated 2016’s still uncommitted and is going to make some coach look smart on the next level.
  • Tonight’s game made a huge statement for the Sailors and put the other class B teams on watch.
