For the final game of the 2016 MLK Classic, class A power house Ann Arbor Huron faced off against the defending class B champs Detroit Country Day. The game started out exactly how we expected; both teams playing hard nose in your face man to man defense with all gas, no brakes. The difference came in the second quarter, when Country Day was able to defend and score, but Huron was not. Country Day would take a 6 point lead going into halftime and would not let it go. Despite the valent efforts of Huron, they just were not able to get over the hump. Country Day’s great ball handling and constant communication on defense would enable them to get the win and wear 2016 MLK Classic victor’s crown.

Destiny Pitts finished with 11 points for the Yellowjackets. Teammate Kaela Webb had 9 points and Tyler Bennett and Maxine Moore both contributed 7 points. Katlyn Brownlee led the River Rats with 15 points, including four three pointers.

Game and Team Highlights

Detroit Country Day:

  • The Yellowjackets did a great job of moving the ball inside and out. They were able to get their post players more involved and it made a big difference for them.

  • The backcourt was able to handle Huron’s pressure well. They had minimal turnovers and was able to see the court.

Lathrup:

  • Huron is a very aggressive team defensively, but they were unable to handle that same type of pressure themselves. As the season progresses, they need to keep in mind that many teams will be serving them a taste of their own medicine.

  • Brownlee and Long did a great job on the defensive end. They kept the game from getting to far away from the River Rats.
