The last time Toledo Rogers and Southfield Lathrup squared off, the game went down to the wire and Rogers walked away with a one point victory. Today’s game would not be very different. The two teams would not only trade leads, but also flip flop quarters. After the half, momentum seemed to be in favor of Rogers, who went on a 6-0 run. That changed before the quarter would end and Lathrup would make some strong moves to the rim to draw the foul, ending the quarter only down one. Rogers, in foul trouble and unable to knock down easy shots, did not seem like themselves. The Chargers would seize the moment and get a 7 point lead, the biggest by either team in the game. Lathrup crashed the boards to prevent second chance shots and it paid off. They get their revenge with a win of Rogers.
Deja Church finished with 19 points and backcourt mate Antoinette Miller had 17 points. Keasja Peace would lead all scorers with a game high 22 points.
Game and Team Highlights
Toledo Rogers:
Ultimately, silly fouls early in the game hurt Rogers. They were not as aggressive defensively the second half due to key players being in foul trouble.
When their outside shots are not falling, they should look inside more and allow themselves to get easy opportunities.
The Rams seemed to stop communicating with each other on defense. They have too much length and athleticism to get out rebounded or “back doored”.
Lathrup:
Taiye Bello was the game changer. Her presence on both ends of the court was what the Chargers needed to pull out this win.
Lathrup crashed the boards and took away second chance opportunities for Rogers. That was the difference in the game that allowed them to take over and never look back.
The way the Chargers played tonight, they are capable of being one of the top four class A teams that we will see at the Breslin in March.
