The opening of the 2016 MLK Classic would be an overtime thriller between Farmington Harrison and Chelsea. Chelsea started off the game seeming to be a little more focused than their opponents, going into halftime leading by 5. Middle of the third quarter, Harrison started to wake up defensively which helped to fuel their offensive game. After some big back to back steals, layups, and baskets from their two seniors Kristen Nelson and Amber Stephens, Harrison would fight back and send the game into overtime. Chelsea was not backing down or giving up. Both teams would trade baskets, giving their team a 1-2 point lead, but neither team was able to grab the game and run away with it. Chelsea would stay focused and disciplined and walk away with the first victory of the day.

Leading the way for the Fighting Hornets was McKenzie Mykala with 15 points followed by her teammate Olivia McCalla with 13 points. Amber Stephens had a game high 22 points and Kristen Nelson finished with 14 points for the Hawks.

Game and Team Highlights

Farmington Harrison:

  • Harrison seemed to start off the game a little unfocused and sluggish. They did a good job of shaking it off and getting refocused.

  • Nelson, while not having her best shooting day, was able to not be discouraged and knocked down some clutch shots to help her team get to overtime.

  • Stephens played like a bull today. She was very active on both ends of the court and was a key contributor.

Chelsea:

  • The Fighting Hornets play very well together and their chemistry helps them execute on the offensive end.

  • Chelsea seemed to get complacent in the fourth quarter, which allowed Harrison to get back in the game. This almost cost them the game.

  • McKenzie Mykala was awesome at leading her team on both ends of the court. She was their voice of reason during Harrison’s run.
