Midland Chemics showed today that they know how to play physical and be effective. They quickly jumped on and in front of Ludington, forcing the Oriels to play rushed and uncomfortable. The Chemics dominated the boards, especially on the offensive end, allowing themselves to get second and even third chance scoring opportunities. Ludington had a mental makeover during halftime and came out appearing to be a totally different team. Although they worked really hard and on paper won the second half, it didn’t get them over their deficit and Midland gets the victory.

Maddie Barrie led Midland with 12 points and also took home MVP honors. The scoring leader for Ludington was Claire Flewselling with 11 points.

Game and Team Highlights

Ludington:

  • Ludington started the game off very timid and slow. They must be able to perform early to get wins.

  • The Oriels will be able to score quicker and more efficiently if they stop thinking so much and just play ball. Move the ball quicker and trust their offense.

Midland:

  • The Chemics did a good job of being aware of what and who was around them on offense. They always found the open man to get the best shot.

  • If Midland continues to play smart and “tough”, look for them to get some big win in the tough Saginaw Valley – North Conference.

In the sixth match-up of the 21st Annual Motor City Roundball classic, the Gators of Arbor Prep faced off against a very disciplined Manistee team. Manistee controlled the opening tip but that is pretty much all they controlled. Arbor Prep was very active defensively and to my surprise, patient on offense. Manistee fought back in the second quarter but couldn’t keep that same energy and momentum the entire game. They couldn’t seem to slow the Gators down or put big numbers on the score board. Final results; Arbor Prep goes home victorious.

MVP honors were awarded to Adrienne Anderson who along with Roh’zane Wells and Nastassja Chambers had 9 points in the win. Emma Burns was high scorer for the Lady Trojans with 12 points.

Game and Team Highlights

Manistee:

  • Manistee played well together, but were out hustled on too many occasions. When playing from behind, they have to find a way to show more urgency.

  • The Lady Trojans were bullied into a fast pace tempo game. If they want to beat similar teams in the future, they will need to control the flow of the game and make it work to their advantage.

Arbor Prep:

  • The Gators got some great defensive minutes from their junior frontline Knight and Williams; however the two will have to bring that same energy and physical play to the offensive end of the court.

  • Arbor Prep did a much better job of running their offense than we have seen in the pass. It showed in their box scoring.

The Crusaders of Detroit King set the standard for heart today. Facing a tough Solon squad, the Lady Crusaders played only 6 players and were all gas no brake. They played at a high, fast speed paced from start to finish; moving the ball up the court quickly and getting several easy baskets. Solon was just as quick but not quick enough for the 2-3 match up zone that King executed very well. The zone forced the Comets to shoot a lot of three pointers, and they were not able to knock them down. Kings rolls their way across the finish line and go back home with the win.

Tia Tedford led the Crusaders and the game with 22 points and won MVP honors. Micaela Kelly finished with 14 points. Dee Bekelja led the Comets with 18 points.

Game and Team Highlights

Solon:

  • I think this team took more offensive fouls that any team I’ve seen in a long time. They took them left and right. That takes a lot of discipline and focus.

  • Solon allowed King to force them into shooting a lot of threes.

Detroit King:

  • The Crusaders played extremely well to have a short rooster. This speaks volume to their current level of physical fitness. The game never slowed down.

  • Solon was able to draw so many offensive fouls because King often went to basket and out of control. A phrase they need to focus on a little more…stop & pop!
