As loud as the Branywine fans were, it did not keep Southfield from being aggressive from the opening whistle. Although they had a few unforced turnovers of their own, the Bluejays definitely shook up the Bobcats and led by 10 at the end of the first. After some encouragement from their coach, Brandywine pulled themselves together and made some key hustle plays including knocking down back to back three point shots. At the end of the first half, they were only down by six points. Southfield’s glue seemed to be coming apart at the start of the second half. They had unforced turnovers and missed open shots that they usually make. In spite of a few bumps in the road, they never stopped playing hard. The Bobcats refused to wave the white flag and continued to attack the basket and draw the foul. In the end, Southfield’s quick and aggressive style of play was just too much for Brandywine. Blue Jays get the win.

MVP honors went to D’Layna Holliman with 23 points. Teammate Alexis Johnson finished with 17 points. Makenna Hartline had the team high for the Bobcats with 17 points.

Game and Team Highlights

Niles Brandywine:

  • Brandywine is a great box-out focused team. When the ball went in the air, all 5 players put a body on someone. You don’t see that too often.

  • Latriece Williams is a pretty solid player, however she needs help rebounding and defending the post. These ladies had dynamic support from their fans. They filled up half of one side of the gym and were very loud! Love to see that from parents and community members.

  • The Bobcats showed a lot of heart and tenacity. No matter how behind they were, they never stopped fighting.

Southfield:

  • The Blue Jays looked determined and focused today. They will need to keep that going to finish in the top three of their conference.

  • The senior leadership was big for Southfield today. They kept their cool during Brandywine’s run and tried to calm the other players as well.
