LBI: Inside The Game Summary

“Caledonia upsets Wayland in Tuesday’s night match-up”

Tuesday, December 15, 2015

Caledonia

Box Scores 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Wayland Union 9 14 9 9 41
Caledonia 9 10 10 14 43

Wayland came into the nights match-up undefeated with quality wins over Hudsonville, Wyoming and Rockford.  Caledonia came in at a respectable 3-1 with a lone 1 point loss to Byron Center; so tonight's match-up was definitely highly anticipated by both fans and these two programs.

Both teams struggled out of the gate with scoring due to stout defensive intensity at both ends of the floor. At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied 9-9. Wayland seemed to control the pace early on, executing on offense and had a 14 to 10 lead going into halftime.  Wayland seemed to be a little more disciplined on offense but as the game went on became a lot more predictable. They continued to lead most of the game until the last 17 seconds when the game was tied 41-41 and Anna LoMonaco scored the game winner on a put-back layup as the clock expired.

Anna LoMonaco ‘18 (Caledonia) led all scorers with 14 points.

Ali Cutler ‘16 (Wayland) scored 13 points.

Game Highlights

Wayland:

  • Ali Cutler has game. She consistently found her teammates when they were open, penetrated the lane and got to the basket, and hit the occasional three. She was most impressive when she posted up other guards on the block and scored.
  • Wayland played good defense but was unable to overcome the lack of size inside which allowed Caledonia to get a lot of second chance points.
  • Wayland is a talented team but the bulk of the offense should be run through Ali Cutler and Hope Dollarhide if they want to reach their goals this year.

Caledonia:

  • Caledonia scored the bulk of their points in transition. Their athletic post players were able to beat Wayland up the court and score easy transition lay ups.
  • Caledonia’s trio of “big men” controlled the boards and this ended up being the difference in the game.
  • In order for Caledonia to build on this win they also need to take advantage of the studs they have and give Anna LoMonaco and Samantha Gehrls more touches.
