For the second game in a row, Powers faces a tough match-up; a team that on paper is the Chargers twin. The defending Class A champs, Birmingham Marian, Are still finding their way but came to the Chargers gym ready to play. The first half of the game started off a little rough. Both teams struggled to score and were committing unforced turnovers. In the middle of the second quarter, Marian found a little momentum and went on a 9-3 run. They went into halftime leading Powers 22-15. At the start of the 3rd, Marian picked up where they left off, led by senior Elizabeth Grobbel; however the chargers weren’t giving up that easily and went on a run of their own. At the end of the quarter, Powers was only down 2. The fourth quarter was filled with physical defense and both teams making multiple trips to the free throw line. The Mustangs would lead for the quarter up to the 2 minute mark. At that point Powers would give it all they have and go on a 10-2 run, led by 6-6 free throw shooting by Francesca Coury. The Mustangs withstood Powers’ last punch and didn’t fall. They get the  win on the road.

Marian was led by Elizabeth Grobbel who finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Maria Kaschalk gave 11 points for the Mustangs. Francesca Coury had a game high 21 points and Anna Ruhstorfer had 9 points for Powers.

Game and Team Highlights

Birmingham Marian:

  • The Mustangs have got to take better care of the ball. They had far too many unforced turnovers.

  • It would behoove Marian to utilize the left side of the court more. There were many scoring opportunities missed due to the not swing the ball to that side.

  • Get tough. It was too easy for the Mustangs to get pushed out of position or stay on their feet after a bump. The season isn’t going to get any easier. Mental and physical toughness is important.

Flint Powers:

  • Once again Powers turned up the intensity late in the game and this time it cost them. They need to come out fired up and ready for action.

  • Coury and Ruhstorfer need help scoring. Once teams zero in on them, others are going to have to step up.

  • Powers plays great defense. It is important for them to continue to do so without committing a ton of fouls.
