The headliner for the 6th Annual Best of Michigan Holiday Classic is a battle of the best from the north vs. the best from the south. The defending Class B state champs Detroit Country Day taking on Toledo Rodgers. Both teams have some of their state’s top players on their roster, and Rogers has a nationally ranked freshman. The first half was back and forth play, with both teams playing top level defense. At the end of the half, DCDS was only down one, thanks to a half court buzzer beater from sophomore Kaela Webb. At the start of the third, the Yellow Jackets come out on fire and went on 10-1 run and finished the quarter with another buzzer beater coming from Destiny Pitts. They would never turn the lead loose. Rogers didn’t wave the white flag and had some great possessions. But in the end, DCDS would pull out the victory and keep their perfect record.

Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets was Kaela Webb with 24 points. Destiny Pitts finished with 16 points. Toledo Rogers’ scoring leader was Keasja Peace with 15 points, followed by Akienreh Johnson with 13 points.

Game and Team Highlights

Toledo Rogers:

  • Rogers is a loaded team, however they must play together as a team. There were moments during the game where you didn’t see that.

  • When shots aren’t falling, it is crucial for the Rams to stay defensive minded to help create easy shots and turnovers for the other team.

  • Look for this high powered team to bounce back and still be a dominate force in the Buckeye State.

Detroit Country Day:

  • Webb showed a lot of heart and tenacity for DCDS. Her play is what sparked Country Day’s run and kept their motors running high.

  • Once again, the Yellow Jackets have got to start off strong to avoid from playing from behind. They may not get a second chance to get the lead later in the season; especially during tournament play.

  • Controlling the boards will be critical for DCDS. Second point opportunities can be the difference between winning and dominating.
