What many deemed an easy win for Class A favorites Southfield Lathrup ended up being a huge statement maker for Grand Rapids CC. In the early part of the game, it was what most expected; physical and well executed basketball. This was pretty much how the game went until the third quarter. The Cougars scored a whopping 28 points and took a 14 point lead over the Chargers. Never saying never, Southfield Lathrup went on a 7-0 run with under 2 minutes left in the game and cut the lead down to 65-62. The Cougars were a little rattled but able to knock down some key free throws and hang on to get the upset.

Both Kyra Bussell and Sophia Karasinski finished the game with 18 points for the Cougars. Antoinette Miller had a team and game high 22 points for Lathrup, accompanied by 19 points from junior Deja Church.

Game and Team Highlights

Southfield Lathrup:

  • Miller and Church played huge for the Chargers. However, if they are going to make it to the big dance, they have to have more help from the other starters.

  • Get ahead early! Don’t play catch up with anyone. Class A is a tough class and playing from behind is just not an option.

  • The Chargers showed their agility today. Having that “never give up” attitude early in the game will take them far.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central:

  • Grand Rapids CC made sure they let everyone know just how good they are. They were a complete team, dominating the boards and having 7 of 10 players put points in the books.

  • Although this was a great win, the Cougars cannot get comfortable. They need to stay focused and hungry. They still have a lot of basketball left this season.

  • Bussell was very impressive. She showed her ability to play and defend on the perimeter and inside. Karasinski shot from the perimeter like a pro.
