When the Chargers of Flint Powers faced off against the Blue Devils of Grosse Pointe South, we knew that this would be a very close and well-played game. Why? Primarily because these teams are almost identical to each other. Both are incredibly well coached, have great leadership from their upper classmen, and are exceptionally disciplined offensively. This game was exactly what we expected. The guards went head to head on both ends of the court. When one team would make a run, it was quickly countered by the other team making a run of their own. At the end of the half, we were starting from scratch, with a tied score of 20-20. In the end, Powers’ toughness proved too much for the Blue Devils and they walked away with the victory.

For Powers, Ruhstorfer finished with a team high 13 points, followed by Coury with 10. Anna Carmondy finished with a game high 17 points for Grosse Pointe South. Teammate Benna Ames contributed 7 points.

Game and Team Highlights

Grosse Pointe South:

  • GP South is in desperate need of an offensive leader. Someone who is not afraid to take over a game if needed to spark her team and give them some energy.
  • The Blue Devils have to find a way to limit the amount of turnovers they have. Turnovers often put out any momentum that they were starting to build.
  • Communicating more will definitely help build defensive intensity for this team. Talk, talk, and talk some more.

Flint Powers:

  • The Chargers are not that big in size, but they are in toughness. They did a phenomenal job of boxing out and controlling the boards. This really helped them today.
  • Powers played very sluggish in the first half but were able to turn up the heat in the second half. They must avoid doing this in the future.
  • This team plays great defense, but they must take that same energy to the offensive end. They executed their plays, but struggled to score.
