What a difference a year makes. Cousino was drilled last season by the defending Class A State Champions 66-24, and it was a wake-up call for the Patriots. On Tuesday night, junior Kierra Fletcher scored a game high 17 points to go along with 7 rebounds to lead Cousino to a 47-37 victory over Birmingham Marian.

Behind three first quarter triples by Cousino’s freshman Kate McArthur, the Patriots jumped out to a quick 19-5 lead. Marian fought back in the second quarter by going inside to senior post Elizabeth Grobbel, who had a team high 9 points and 10 rebounds to go into halftime down 27-16.

The Mustangs started the third and fourth quarters with more defensive intensity to cut the Patriots lead down to 5 points but that is as close as they would get. Cousino finished off the Mustangs to pick up a huge road win.

Game Highlights

Warren Cousino:

  • The Patriots were solid on both ends of the floor tonight. They broke the Mustangs pressure defense for easy scoring opportunities.
  • They must find another scoring option. They struggled to find any offensive rhythm when Fletcher was not on the floor.
  • Kate McArthur can be key for the Patriots if they want to make a deep tournament run. She’s a good shooter that can take some of the pressure off of Fletcher.

Birmingham Marian:

  • Marian is a still a good and dangerous team. They’re much disciplined and play good defense and rebound well on both ends.
  • They have some pieces to work with in post players Elizabeth Grobbel, Uche Ikeand and guard Olivia Moore to give them a legitimate shot at competing for a Catholic League Championship.
