From the opening tip, Midland Dow played as though they had a chip on their shoulder. After blowing a 14 point lead against Country Day and falling short of a win, the Chargers showed that they were fired up. Flushing was very effective on the defensive end but struggled to knock down a basket, ending the first quarter with only one player on the books with points, junior Breanna Perry. At the start of the third, the Raiders seemed to come out with a little spark, and were able to convert on some great possessions. Shortly after, back to back turnovers followed by back to back threes from Ellie Taylor, the Raiders flame started to dimmer…so we thought. Flushing opened the final quarter on a 6-0 run, accompanied by some impressive stops and were only down by six with a little under 3 minutes left in the game. The two teams would battle down to the last and final second, but the Charges would execute from the line, going 7-9 and finishing the game with a win.

Leading all scorers with a game high 19 points was Breanna Perry, who also snagged 10 rebounds. Junior Lauren Newman finished with 12 points and Clare Glowniak gave the Raiders 7 points. Ellie Taylor finished as the leading scorer for Midland Dow with 15 points. Freshman Molly Davis finished with 11, while Kaylee Wasco gave 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Game Highlights

Midland Dow:

  • The Chargers gave great effort on the defensive end. They gave the Raiders trouble from the opening tip.

  • When their shot isn’t falling, they need to get the ball inside more. A couple of possessions the post was looked off and it resulted in turnovers.

  • Midland Dow did a great job crashing the boards. When your guards walk away with five or six rebounds each, that’s always a good sign.

Flushing:

  • This isn’t the same go-getter Flushing team we saw last year. Their offense seems stagnant and they aren’t being aggressive.

  • The bigs need help with rebounding on both ends of the court. This will help keep them out of foul trouble.

  • Communication is the golden ticket. There isn’t enough talking between the players on the court. The Raiders need to trust each other and play their style of basketball.
