Some of the state's best will invade the Swamp on Saturday

LBI Ice Breaker Classic Preview

This Saturday a loaded lineup with many of the state’s top teams in various classes, along with many of the state’s top players including some possible Miss Basketball Candidates, will be participating in the 3rd Annual Ice Breaker Classic on Saturday December 5th at Ypsilanti Arbor Prep High School. It is rare that you see an event like this, with college level athletes participating in every single game. From start to finish, the Ice Breaker Classic will be a basketball lover’s dream come true.

Ann Arbor Skyline vs Flat Rock

Ann Arbor Skyline is a very young team going up against an experienced Flat Rock squad, led by 6’1” senior post Morgan Villemure. The Eagles could possibly start three freshmen this season, including 6’0” post Edan Johnson. Flat Rock might walk away with the win in this matchup but the Eagles won’t go away easily.

Dearborn Heights Robichaud vs Grosse Pointe Liggett

These teams will look completely different this year as the Bulldogs look to avenge a 63-42 defeat last year to the Knights. This game will feature two of the state’s top 2017 point guards, Robichaud’s Kayla Brown and Liggett’s Nia Ahart, and should be an intense battle of the floor generals. Both teams will be looking to push the tempo and get easy shots. This will be an exciting game to watch as each team will only go as far as their point guards can take them.

Southfield Lathrup vs Bay City John Glenn

Lathrup, who comes in as the team to beat in Class A, will get an early test from Bay City John Glenn. The Bobcats 6’3” post Cassidy Boesch is a handful, but she will have her hands full as well with the Bello twins. These University of Minnesota commits can run, rebound and defend. The Lathrup backcourt is probably the best in the state with Antoinette Miller and Deja Church. They could very well be the determining factor in the outcome of this game.

Midland Dow vs Detroit Country Day School

LBInsider #1 rated team, the Detroit Country Day Yellow Jackets, return 5 key players from last year’s Class B state championship team. They will take on a very talented Midland Dow squad led by 6’2” junior Kaylee Wasco and 5’8” junior guard Ellie Taylor. Taylor is coming off a career high 44 points on Tuesday night. DCDS Destiny Pitts will look to start the year off how she ended it last year, by having a monster game.  Look for a battle in the paint with Tylar Bennett and Maxine Moore who will test the strength and versatility of Wasco. We are definitely looking forward to see how acclaimed Midland Dow freshman Molly Davis handles the tough pressure defense of Country Day guards Kayla Webb and Arika Tolbert.

Ann Arbor Huron vs Arbor Prep

The backyard brawl is ready for round 2.  Round 1 went in favor of the River Rats last season on their home court. This time the Gators get the River Rats in the Swamp, which is like playing in the old Boston Garden; you have to be on your “A” game to win in that place. Natassja Chambers and company will look to pressure Huron guards and make this an up-tempo game. Steve Vinson will have his team ready to play, but Huron point guard Katelynn Brownlee will have to play under control and not get rattled to give Huron a chance for the victory.
