The season opener for both the Lady Hawks of Flint Hamady and the Lady Knights of Flint Southwestern was played tonight in front of a pretty large crowd. The atmosphere was perfect for two crosstown rivals to face off. Unfortunately, the game wasn’t as exciting as the crowd had hoped it would be. From the opening tip Flint SW, despite getting numerous shot attempts, struggled to hit a basket. This, accompanied by multiple turnovers and foul trouble, opened up the door for Hamady to get a comfortable lead and maintain control of the game. Hamady was back to the game that they have been showing us for years; fast pace offense and full court press. They also ran a box and one defense, face guarding SW’s leading scorer from last season, Tyeshia Bowers. SW was unable to make adjustments without their leading scorer handling the ball and did not score until the 3:34 mark in the 1st quarter. This set the tone for the remainder of the game and Hamady rolled on to victory in a dominate fashion.

Leading the way for the Hawks was their all-state senior guard, Jalisha Terry with 19 points. Deajah Cofield added 14 points and Krystal Rice had 11 points. Tyeshia Bowers and Brooklyn Howard both contributed 13 points for Southwestern. The Hawks will take on New Lothrop at home on Tuesday, December 8 and the Knights will head to Swartz Creek Tuesday, December 01, 2015.

Game Highlights

Flint Hamady:

  • Jalisha Terry is the leader of this team. As she gets energy and starts to hit shots, her team feeds off of her.

  • In an effort to be a tougher, more aggressive team, the Lady Hawks must be careful to stay focused on playing solid defense and staying out of foul trouble.

  • Hamady looked great running the floor in transition and playing as a team on offense.

Southwestern:

  • SW must find a way to limit their amount of turnovers and finish around the rim.

  • The Lady Knights were aggressive on offense, attacking the rim in attempts to draw the foul. However, they must work on doing this while maintaining good body control and learning when to stop and shoot the pull up.

  • It was very clear that Tyeshia Bowers is the top contributor of the team. She has to find a way to get open and score consistently. In addition to this, the other players must also give some scoring support and be comfortable handling the ball.
