The Player Behind The Game Spotlight: Alexis Sevillian (@alexis_laniece)

When Alexis Sevillian was 10 years old, she would consistently run through (or over) opponents and did so without thought or hesitation. In her mind, they were in her way. That mentality hasn’t changed much, but her game surely has. Not the “bully” she used to be, she instead increased her basketball IQ and skill set and now finds crafty and very effective ways to get around her opponents. Whether she’s slashing to the basket, shooting the long range shot, or drawing defenders to get her teammates open for easy shots, she gets the job done. Her style of play may have changed, but her toughness has not. She’s not afraid of contact and is always willing to dive for the loose ball, save the play by jumping out of bounds, or get in a pile of players to create a jump ball situation. Alexis’ toughness and winning attitude has earned her this week’s “The Player Behind the Game” spotlight honors.

Current High School: Goodrich High School

What college/university have you committed to?: University of Iowa

What will you major in?: Pre-Med or Criminal Justice

Why did you choose this school?:  I first visited the campus when I was in the 9th grade and I instantly fell in love. I felt a connection with the coaches, players, program and campus. The coaching staff and the players made me feel extremely comfortable.

What are some of your other hobbies or talents?:  A lot of my time is spent with family. Vacationing is one of my favorite things to do with them. We also attend a variety of sporting events outside of basketball together. The majority of my alone time I spend working out and training.

Who is your favorite player and why? I’ve always admired Maya Moore since she played at Connecticut. I love her toughness and leadership.

What will you miss most about high school and high school basketball?:  I will miss the support system of the Goodrich fans. No matter what sport, the community is always there supporting. I will also miss the coaching staff. We have become family and have had great fun over the years. I wouldn’t have chosen to spend my high school years anywhere else.

What are you looking forward to the most about college and playing college basketball? The one thing I am looking forward to the most is playing for such an amazing coach. Coach Bluder is professional, family oriented and a winner. I’m looking forward to making contributions to help my team achieve our goals. My sister plays for Penn State, so I’m also looking forward to playing against her and winning! It will be her senior year and my freshman year, so it should be exciting.

What advice would you like to give to younger players about basketball and selecting a college/university?:  My advice is to not make your decision based on where others want you to go, how big the school is, or even the name of the school. Make your decision based on your connection/relationship that you build with the staff and players. Research the type of game the program runs and know the role you’ll have in that system. More importantly, you need to make sure the university has a great program in your field of study. Academics and athletics go hand in hand.

Who would you like to thank for helping you achieve all that you’ve accomplished?: My parents for allowing me to be able to have this opportunity and allowing me to do everything that I have with basketball. Also for all the support they’ve given me, along with the rest of my family. My coaches and trainers have been very instrumental, too. They have all enhanced my game and pushed me to my full potential.

Congrats Alexis on all of your success and for becoming a BIG 10 player! The LBI staff wishes you and the other Goodrich Lady Martians the best of luck during this season.
