The Player Behind The Game Spotlight: Mardrekia Cook
When LBI first saw Mardrekia Cook play in the eighth grade, we knew she was special. Fearless, aggressive and an all around hustle player, Cook never slowed down and continued to dominate throughout her high school career. Her “no one can stop me” court swag has not only allowed her to gain respect from basketball players and coaches state wide, but has also earned her a spot in the Michigan 2016 Ms. Basketball race, and a Division I scholarship. If Cook continues to grow her game from the physical and mental aspects, she will be unstoppable during the 2015-16 high school season, and one of the top freshmen in the Big 10.
Current High School: Muskegon High School
What college/university have you committed to?: Michigan State University (MSU)
What will you major in?: Sports Medicine
Why did you choose this school?: I chose MSU over the other schools because it is family oriented…sort of like love at first sight. LOL
What other offers did you receive?: I received several offers from the Big 10 & Big East schools.
When you’re not playing basketball, what do you like to do in your spare time?: When I’m not playing basketball I like to hang out with my friends.
What popular basketball player would you compare your game to?: I would compare my game to Russell Westbrook because he always penetrates aggressively and with so much energy.
What are you looking forward to about college and playing on the next level?: I’m looking forward to winning in college and making a big impact on my team.
What advice would you like to give to younger players about basketball and selecting a college/university?: The advice I have for the younger ladies is go with what’s best for you! At the end of the day, it’s what you want, not what somebody else wants.
Who would you like to thank for helping you achieve all that you’ve accomplished?: One person I always acknowledge is God for blessing me with a gift that can take me far in life. I also want to thank my mother because without her, none of this would be possible.
