2015 MHSAA Girls Basketball Regional’s Preview

The MHSAA crowned its District champions last week, but now this is when the road to the Breslin Center gets a little tough. Here is a preview of what to expect in some of the top Class A Regional match ups in Michigan. Games will start on Tuesday, March 10, 2015.

Class A

Region 1 @ Portage Central
Teams: Ann Arbor Huron, DeWitt, Battle Creek Lakeview, Kalamazoo Central

Overview: Dewitt which beat Ann Arbor Huron back in December will look to knock off the River Rats again on Tuesday night. Since that defeat Huron has been a roll. Look for Huron to win a close game.

Favorite: AA Huron

Region 2 @ Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills
Teams: Grand Rapids Forest Hills, Mona Shores, Hudsonville, Byron Center

Overview: Sophomore PG Jordan Walker was brilliant during district play & I don’t see her slowing down this week. She will lead the Sailors to a Quarterfinal appearance.

Favorite: Mona Shores

Region 7 @ Fenton
Teams: Hartland, White Lake Lakeland, Salem, Fenton

Overview: Hartland avenged two earlier losses to Brighton in the regular season by knocking off the Bulldogs in there district final matchup. Salem has not lost a game since December & I don’t see them losing any time soon.

Favorite: Salem

Region 8 @ Bay City Western
Teams: Marquette, Saginaw Heritage, Flushing, Carman-Ainsworth

Overview: Flushing is a very talented team that beat Saginaw Heritage in a down to the wire contest two weeks ago. However, Heritage has the talent to knock off the Raiders, which they will do if both teams win on Tuesday night.

Favorite: Saginaw Heritage

Region 5 @ Southfield
Teams: Southfield Lathrup, Marian, Mercy, Livonia Stevenson

Overview: Marian & Lathrup are the two best teams in Class A and I wish this game could be at the Breslin Center. Marian must keep Lathrup off of the boards on both ends of the floor to keep their season alive. Lathrup’s backcourt must be able to handle Marian’s brilliant half and full court defense or they will struggle.

Favorite: Marian

Region 6 @ Sterling Heights Stevenson
Teams: Stoney Creek, Waterford Kettering, Romeo, Port Huron Northern

Overview: Kettering is one of the best defensive teams in the state. Stoney Creek is a very underrated team that can get hot if you’re not careful. Port Huron Northern is very well coached and will play opponents hard to the very end.

Favorite: Waterford Kettering

Region 3 @ Dearborn
Teams: Romulus, Allen Park, Woodhaven, Temperance Bedford

Overview: This one is tough to call. Woodhaven’s Hailey Leidel can light up the scoreboard on any given night. Bedford will not go away easily but in the end Romulus guards will lead them to another Regional Championship.

Favorite: Romulus

Region 4 @ Grosse Pointe South
Teams: Grosse Pointe South, Detroit King, Lakeshore, Sterling Heights

Overview: Grosse Pointe South and Detroit King will be a great game on Tuesday night, definitely Breslin Center worthy. GP South Cierra Rice will look to lead her team to victory over a talented Detroit King squad led by Janae Williams. I give the edge to King, but I know Kevin Richards will come up with a fantastic game plan for GP South that could lead them to victory.

Favorite: Detroit King
