Perrysburg, OH – Players from all over the Buckeye State and South Michigan traveled to Owens Community College to showcase their skills and talent in front of college coaches. Many stood out during the skills tests, others during the 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 play. All in all, the day did not go to waste, and it was time well spent in the gym.
Here are a few standout players that crossed my path…
Ryonna Armstrong 2020 5’9” PG Toledo Notre Dame H.S.
Ryonna is athletic with a high motor. She was very active on both ends of the court. Her signature move, the step-back jumper, was almost unstoppable and left quite a few of her opponents stumbling on the back of their heels.
Layla Dials 2021 5’7 CG Willard H.S.
With a quick first step and uphill speed, Layla was at her best driving to the hoop. She has a good eye and can spot the open man in traffic, and did a great job of seeing the court.
Cierra Harris 2020 5’9” SF Sylvania Southview H.S.
Long and athletic, Cierra did a great job of playing off the ball defense and being in the passing lane for steals. She ran the court well in transition and finished strong at the rim with and without a defender in her face.
Nadia McDowell-Jackson 2020 5’7” PG Pickerington Central H.S
A versatile player that is skilled and tough, Nadia is very athletic. She sees the court and makes great decisions with the ball. She knew when to score and when to keep the offense moving. She showed that she is a true floor leader.
Alyson Ray 2021 5’7” PG Toledo Notre Dame H.S.
Alyson is fast and as no problem getting inside the paint to either finish with a nice short pull up or dish it off to a wide-open teammate. She has nice moves to protect the ball when she’s at the rim and was a top-notch defender the entire day.
Aubrey Zmuda 2020 6’3” C Toledo Notre Dame H.S.
Aubrey was an undeniable presence in the post on both ends of the court. She was amazing at snagging down rebounds and clearing out her space. She also did a nice job of cleaning up the boards for second-chance scoring opportunities.
Takierra Robinson 2021 5’8” CG Dayton Carroll H.S.
A strong guard that uses her strength to her advantage, Takierra did not hesitate to get inside and battle against bigger players. She knows the game and was able to make huge impacts with and without the ball in her hands. When her legs were fresh, she showed she could score when called upon.
Heather Spare 2022 6’3” C Dundee H.S.
Heather was very effective at not standing still on offense and helping to keep the ball moving for the best shot opportunity. She is a strong one-on-one defender that consistently rebounded and blocked shots. She finished numerous times with contact and did so with ease.
Megan Gibbs 2023 5’9” SG Perrysburg H.S.
Megan worked hard on offense and defense. Her energy level was high, and she showed her toughness. Megan also showed her nice ball handles that allowed her to get in the paint for a floater or easy assist.
Sammi Mikonowicz 2020 5’10” SF Rossford H.S.
A high IQ and consistent shot, Sammi made great decisions with the ball and had a nice shot selection. Although she wears the title of being a shooter, she will definitely put the ball on the floor and drive to the hole. She is also a solid defender with great timing.
Jamie Schmeltz 2020 5’9” SF Eastwood H.S.
Jamie hustled and worked hard in every game. She has nice moves that she uses to get open and to the basket. She can shoot the 15 footer off the bounce and will do so without hesitation. Jamie is capable of playing and defending the guard position, using her long arms to alter shots and shoot over smaller players.
Gretchen Sigman 2024 5’8” SG Springfield H.S.
Long arms and a quick release, Gretchen had the hot hand on many occasions that defenders could not stop. She knocked down shots from all over the court, but also got some easy buckets at the rim. She is a hustle player and often was the only one sprinting back on defense.
