Ypsilanti, MI: The 5th Annual Ice Breaker Classic was filled with tons of high school girls’ basketball talent from across the state of Michigan; talent for all levels of collegiate basketball coaches to recruit to help take their programs to the next level. The competition was very tough throughout the day with the most fierce battle being between heavily anticipated matchup Wayne Memorial and Detroit Country Day. That game definitely lived up to its hype!  The Ice Breaker is an excellent event for high school teams to begin their season showing off all of the hard work put in during the pre-season; a great start on the journey to Grand Rapids in March.

Here are some of the most impressive players on the day:

5'11" SG 2018 Emily Spitzley - Pewamo-Westphalia HS
The Grand Valley State signee came out ready to go from the opening tip. Spitzley, who scored 15 of her game-high 28 points in the first quarter, was very productive from behind the arc as she knocked down five triples along with a few assists. Spitzley does a lot for her squad which should help them have a good chance of getting back to the Class C state title game come March.

5'10" SF 2020 Hannah Spitzley - Pewamo-Westphalia HS
If you haven't heard of this kid before Saturday, soon you will hear this name a lot more. The versatile sophomore pumped in 27 points in a variety of ways, as she scored off the dribble, many offensive put-backs, and mid-range jumpers. She also played stellar man-man defense as she showed that she's very capable of defending multiple positions on the floor.

5'8" PG 2021 Nykesha Sanders - Chandler Park HS
Sanders has a bright future ahead of her. Only a freshman and playing the most crucial position in the game, she held her own in her game against Midland Dow. Sanders displayed a lot of poise throughout the day; quick handles that allowed her to attack the basket or find open teammates, not to mention she has an immediate release from the behind the three-point line.  She led Chandler Park with a team-high 17 points.

5'7" PG 2019 Molly Davis - Midland Dow HS
Davis was brilliant on Saturday morning as she pumped in a game-high 26 points against Chandler Park. The future Central Michigan Chippewa was very efficient on the court in all aspects. Davis handled the Eagles full court pressure very easily. She never turned the ball over and that led to smooth transitions and few easy layups for herself. When she was not finishing at the rim herself, she was finding her teammates for easy scoring opportunities. This is not the Midland Dow team that we are used to watching in years past, but when you have a point guard like Davis, you are still in good shape.

5’5” PG 2018 Camree’ Clegg – Wayne Memorial HS
If there were a performance of the day award, it would have to go to Clegg.  The Clemson signee put on a spectacular show Saturday against her former team, Detroit Country Day.  Cam got off to a hot start that she maintained until the final buzzer.  She knocked down ten (10) three-pointers on her way to a game high 41points.  Early and often, she dropped bombs from everywhere, finishing the first half with a buzzer-beating triple to go into halftime with 22 points.  This early season game definitely had a playoff feel to it as the teams battled back and forth from the beginning to the end.  In the waning moments Cam made some key plays to keep her team within striking distance.  She shot an amazing 10-15 from three-point range.  With seconds remaining in the fourth quarter Clegg was left open for a split second in the right corner and put the final dagger into Country Day by hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer enabling Wayne to escape with a thrilling 73-70 win.   

5’10” SG 2019 Jeanae Terry – Wayne Memorial HS
Terry and Cam Clegg make up the highest scoring backcourt in the state.  The duo combined for 62 of Wayne’s 73 points. Jeanae had a Russell Westbrook type performance as she finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, 9 assists and 8 steals in an all-around stellar performance.  She made the plays needed for her team to come out with the win.  Her ability to play both ends of the floor at a high level has attracted the attention of many of the top college programs.  Jeanae’s intensity all over the court creates havoc for teams, which makes Wayne very competitive and fun to watch.

5’7” PG 2018 Kaela Webb – Detroit Country Day HS
The Providence signee had a solid performance for a balanced Country Day attack.  She finished the game with a double-double (10pts, 11 assists).  Kaela had a positive impact on the game in ways other than scoring.  She drew a lot of attention from the defense, which opened up scoring opportunities for her teammates.  Kaela’s scoring punch and play-making ability will, once again, make Country Day a force to be reckoned with in Class B.  

6’0” PF 2019 Adrian Folks – Detroit Country Day HS   
Adrian was a key contributor Saturday for Country Day.  The junior forward led the Yellow Jackets with 22 points on 9-10 shooting from the field.  She was very efficient on the floor and converted on several contested layups.  Folks’ hot hand was key in Country Day staying close throughout the game.  When she got the ball inside she impressed the crowd with her footwork and post moves.  The improvement in her game showed and it piqued the interest of the college coaches in attendance. 

5’8” PG 2019 Jasmine Powell – Detroit Country Day HS
This season will be one of high expectations for Powell as she enters her junior campaign.  She appears up for the challenge, as she is clearly one of the leaders on the floor for Country Day.  Her increased role includes a heavier scoring load, evidenced by her 17 pts. on Saturday.  She shot 7-9 from the floor and made her only three-point attempt.  Despite the last-second loss to Wayne, it is clear that Jasmine will be a major contributor for DCDS as they remain one of the top teams in the state.

6’0” PF 2018 Maxine Moore – Detroit Country Day HS
Moore is a double-double machine for the Yellow Jackets and she didn’t disappoint on Saturday.  She was impossible to stop when she got the ball inside finishing with 15pts and 10 rebounds.  Max was dominant on the boards during a late Country Day run in the second half.  The Western Michigan signee displayed her versatility by stepping out to hit a three-pointer and made the mid-range jumper with consistency.  As the season progresses expect Max to become a more dominant force in the middle for Country Day.  Don’t be surprised to see this team make a deep tournament run in March.

6’0” PF 2019 Kashyra Jackson – Arbor Prep HS
Kashyra had a breakout game against Goodrich on Saturday.  Her energy in the first half got her teammates going after a slow start.  Jackson scored the team’s first six (6) points in the opening quarter. This required more defensive attention from Goodrich, opening up the scoring for her teammates.  She finished with 13pts. for the game.  Kash was very active on defense and on the boards.  Due in part to her sustained effort throughout, what was a close game turned into an easy 60-39 win for Prep. 

5’11” PG 2019 Mahri Petree – Arbor Prep HS
The youngest Petree sister had a big game for Arbor Prep this weekend.  Mahri led the Gators with 17 pts. on the evening but, more importantly, ran the offense and controlled the tempo.  She was a terror on the press, which forced a multitude of turnovers against Goodrich.  Mahri made great decisions with the ball in the half-court and in transition, which broke open a game that was close in the early stages.  Usually a force running the wing and on the offensive glass, Petree took on the brunt of the ball handling for Prep.  She had to assume a different role for her team and showed her versatility by getting the job done. 

6’0” SG 2018 Lasha Petree – Arbor Prep HS
Plagued by foul trouble throughout the contest, Lasha still had a major impact on the outcome of Saturday’s matchup against Goodrich.  With Petree out of the game with two quick first quarter fouls Arbor Prep struggled to find their rhythm.  The game went back and forth until she was on the floor for longer periods of time.  Prep relies on Lasha’s scoring to put teams away as she is the team’s leading scorer.  She hit a big three down the stretch and was a pest on defense, collecting 8 steals.  The 12 pts. she scored in limited action in the 60-39 win over Goodrich were timely and helped the Gators pull away.  The Bradley signee showed that she doesn’t need much time to put the ball in the basket. 

5’9” SG 2020 Maddie Voelker – Goodrich HS
Maddie had a very good game against Arbor Prep in the Ice Breaker finale on Saturday.  The Gators’ pressure was an issue for the Martians in this game but it didn’t seem to bother Voelker.  Despite the constant pressure she stayed cool, calm and collected to the tune of a game-high 21 pts. on 7-10 shooting.  She was also perfect from the free-throw line, going 6-6 for the game and buried her only 3-pt. attempt.  Maddie consistently found ways to get open against Prep.  She was able to dribble to the rim against pressure and completed a few “and one” opportunities.  Just a sophomore, Voelker showed a lot of grit and toughness in a very physical game.  She has the ability to play inside and outside with an excellent shooting touch to match.  The future is bright for this young Lady Martian.
