West Michigan Fall Jamboree

The fall travel season has begun. One week before the final 2017 evaluation period, the West Michigan Drive hosted some of the top teams in Caledonia for a tune-up tournament. A ton of Division II, III and NAIA coaches were in attendance for an eventful day of hoops. Here are a few standouts from the West Michigan Fall Jamboree:

Damiyah Hageman 5'7” PG Detroit Edison HS/Michigan Crossover 15U EYBL 2021
Highly regarded as the top player in Michigan's loaded 2021 class, Hageman's play backed up that claim as she affected the game in a multitude of ways. She showed the ability to get rid of the ball quickly with strong lead passes to find open teammates, got to the basket in transition, finished at the rim, and hit shots from the perimeter at a good rate. She led her team to a championship victory in convincing fashion.

AJ Ediger 6’1” Post Hamilton HS/WM Drive 2021
Ediger spent the day on double duty playing with both Drive teams and was impressive on each level. Against her age group, she got the best of opponents using her length. Ediger was able to catch the ball inside and finish over the defense with ease. Her maturity was on display against the older competition as she used her post tools to get defenders off their feet and wasn't afraid to get on the ground and dive for 50-50 balls to keep possession in favor of her team.

Alexis Johnson 6'0 SF Southfield A&T HS/Michigan Crossover 16U EYBL 2019
The inside was the bread and butter for Johnson in the championship game vs. 1Nation. Her teammates did a good job of getting her the ball in open spots, and she made the opposition pay with her soft touch around the basket and in the short corner. Her activity on the offensive glass created second chance opportunities which helped seal the game.

Maddie Novak 5'11” SG Detroit Country Day HS/1Nation Elite 2019
Shooters shoot! Novak is a dead-eye shooter, and if she is left open, you can almost assure that you will pay. In the last two games of the day, she averaged 4.5 three-point makes netting four against the Mystics and five against the Crossover. She also did an excellent job moving without the basketball which allowed her to get free and finish floaters in the lane.

Jayah Hicks 6’ Post Wayne Memorial HS/1Nation Elite 2019
One of the fastest rising 2019's statewide is Jayah Hicks. Her game has largely improved; she is a true hybrid forward that can get the ball off the rim and control the offense. Her speed allowed her to get by the opposition and stop and hit the pull-up jumper in transition. Her stock will continue to rise as she displayed the ability to guard every position as well as play three different positions on the floor. Another thing that stands out is her motor! She doesn't give up on plays, and if she makes a mistake, she is quick to sprint back on defense to make up for it.

Jeanae Terry  5’9” PG Wayne Memorial HS/1Nation Elite 2019
Terry had quite the day as she came up big for her team in every game during the event. Her shots were falling from all over the floor, her dribble combinations made it hard for defenders to stay in front of her, and when she drew multiple defenders, it created open shots for her teammates. She is an improving defender, and by keeping her long arms in the passing lanes, it made it hard for her opponents to pass the ball through without disruption.

Jasmine Powell 5’7” PG Detroit Country Day HS/Michigan Crossover 16U EYBL 2019
Powell asserted herself from the tip in the championship game; she showed she is a pesky on-ball defender, as she agitated the other guards and made it hard for them to get off or connect on shots. She thrived in the open court as most of her baskets came on fast break possessions. Her aggression made it easy for her to penetrate and draw fouls to help put the game away.

Mallory McCartney 5'7” PG Saginaw Heritage/Michigan Mystics Dream Team 2019
In the Mystics loss to 1Nation, it was McCartney that helped her team stay in it almost single-handedly. Every time 1Nation made a big run, she put it to a halt with a timely three-pointer. She was able to create for herself and come off screens en route to 29 points.

Kailee Davis 5’5” PG Detroit Renaissance HS/Michigan Crossover 15U EYBL 2021
Davis helped lead a very talented Michigan Crossover squad to the Platinum Division title at the West Michigan Fall Jamboree by going 6-6 from the three-point land. When Davis was not knocking down shots, she was an outstanding distributor, giving teammates some nice passes for easy scoring opportunities. Davis can do more with the ball in her hands and will be a major reason that her high school will be very much improved in this upcoming season.

Mya Hiram 5’11” Post Onsted HS/Michigan Premier 2021
Hiram did a lot of things well on Sunday against some stiff competition. Mya was very efficient around the rim scoring on numerous post moves, in transition and offensive put backs, and she also showed that she could step out and play away from the basket. Hiram is another kid from a talented class of 2021 that we will keep an eye on during the upcoming season.
