The snowy weather conditions didn’t stop teams from competing in Grand Rapids

Camille Jackson '22 of Illinois X-Citement was one the top players at the Drive To The Hoop Classic

Grand Rapids, MI: The Drive to the Hoop Classic took place this past weekend in Grand Rapids, MI. The snowy weather conditions didn’t stop teams from Michigan, Indiana & Illinois from participating in one of the top middle school events in the Midwest. Kudos to tournament director Larry Copeland who did a wonderful job putting it all together.

Here is a brief recap of some of the players that caught the eyes of LBI.

Kenzie Bowers 5’9” PG West Michigan Drive 2021
She was good with the ball in her hands; Bowers found the open man consistently and was able to get into the paint and finish with either hand.  She was also able to hit a couple of perimeter shots here and there when the opportunity presented.

Damiya Hagemann 5’7” PG Michigan Crossover 2021
Hageman was impressive with her ability to contribute on both ends of the floor in variety of ways.  She’s very smooth and has good court instincts on both sides of the ball. Defensively she plays aggressively and offensively she can create opportunities for herself or others. She has a good mid-range shot which makes her more difficult to defend.

Jillian Brown 5’10” WG MBA (MI) 2021
Brown has huge potential to be very good.  She was solid in transition and found ways to finish at different levels in half court sets. Really like her floor production and potential for long term success. If she continues to grow and develop both physically and skill wise, she will be a force.

Morasha Wiggins 6’ WF Michigan Crossover 2021
Wiggins was arguably the most athletic player in the gym this past weekend. An extremely talented wing, she can play numerous positions with her skill and size. She knows how to finish in transition and also showed the ability to beat her defender off the dribble.

Olivia Smith 5’5” PG Always 100 (IN) 2021
Smith was the ignition to her team’s full court pressure defense. She kept her team under control and never seemed to get rattled in any situation that the young feisty player was put in. Whoever Smith was defending on or off the ball, she made them work for everything.

Ayanna Patterson 6’ Post Always 100 (IN) 2022
Patterson scored in the paint at a high rate and showed that she could put the ball on floor.  But most impressively she affected the games substantially with her all-out hustle and effort making sure to play strong defense consistently. She used her length and athletic ability to force opponents into tough shot attempts and then was a major factor on the glass. This young lady looks like another quality prospect on the rise from the Hoosier state.

Camille Jackson 5’9” PG Illinois X-Citement 2022
Jackson is a special talent who can play either spot on the perimeter. She has good length and advanced ball handling and finishing skills. She can fill it up when she gets it going and balances her scoring with nice vision and playmaking potential. Jackson has the chance to be another big time player from the Windy City.

Mya Petticord 5’7 WG Michigan Storm 2022
Playing up a division this past weekend, Petticord was able to hold her own. She displayed a good handle going left or right and has a really nice stroke. She knows when to attack the paint which opened up scoring opportunities for her teammates.

J’asia Scott 5’7 WG Always 100 (IN) 2022
Scott is a physical guard who finishes at the rim with a purpose. She was not only her team’s best offensive weapon, but was also asked to defend the other team’s best player and she held her own. I am looking to forward to watching this kid’s game develop over the next few years.

Abby Kimball 5’9” WG FBC (MI) 2022
Kimball can flat out shoot the rock; she made a lot of shots this past weekend. She knows where to find the soft spots in the defense and make you pay. Great feel for the game that doesn’t rush or force anything. She just lets the game to her.
