In the sixth and final game of the 4th Annual Icebreaker Classic, the Wayne Memorial Zebras took on class B final four contestants Detroit County Day Yellowjackets.

The first half belonged to Country Day. They ran the court, played strong defense, moved the ball around and had 6 players in the score book. The one thing they could not seem to do was stop Camree Clegg. The sophomore guard looked as if she was with the basket, rarely missing. At halftime, she had 18 of the Zebras’ 26 points. However her team would have to fight a 20 point deficit the remainder of the game.

At the beginning of the 3rd quarter DCDS picked up where they left off and but seem to be a little relaxed on defense. Wayne took advantage of this and went at the Yellowjackets hard. They went on a nice run of their own and actually won the third quarter. However, despite their great offensive focus, they didn’t have enough power to stop Country Day. Led by senior wing Destiny Pitts, DCDS put their foot on the necks of Wayne and never let up. Sophomore Janae Terry tried to give her team some life, especially after Clegg fouled out of the game early in the 4th quarter. It would not be enough and Country day got the game.

Leading scorers: Wayne Memorial: Terry 27, Clegg 26; Country Day: Pitts 22, Bennett 17, Webb 12, Moore 11

Game and Team Highlights

Wayne Memorial

  • The Zebras are a young team with a huge up side. The score doesn’t reflect their tenacity and how hard they play. When they are all the way healthy, they will be a hard team to beat.
  • Clegg and Terry make a great team. They combined for 43 of the Wayne’s 60 points.

Detroit Country Day:

  • Country Day will be a very hard team to defend due to the having at least three scoring options on the floor at all times.
  • When Wayne made their run in the third quarter, the Yellowjackets did not skip a beat. They kept their composure, encouraged each other and stuck to the game plan.
