Game 5 of the 4th Annual Icebreaker Classic featured the highly anticipated game of the Warriors of Southfield A&T versus the Midland Dow Charges. Both teams are picked as favorites in the top 5 list for the Class A State title.

In the start of the game, both teams had their defense turned up to ten but could barely get a point on the board. Senior guard Ellie Taylor opened the game up with a three pointer and it was more than three and a half minutes before the Chargers would score again. The Warriors had similar struggles, only scoring three points in the entire third quarter.

Going into the 4th Southfield found themselves down double digits and still struggling to hit a shot. With guidance and major adjustment from Coach Marshall, state stand-out Deja Church help lead the way for a tremendous comeback. In the final 45 seconds of the game, both teams would trade baskets, with the Chargers leading by three. Despite a hard fought effort, the Warriors would fall to Midland Dow.

Leading scorers: Southfield A&T: Church 16, Johnson 10; Midland Dow: Taylor 21, Davis 8

Game and Team Highlights

Southfield A&T:

  • The Warriors are a very strong defensive team. They shift well and communicate. However they must match that intensity on the offensive end.
  • Congratulations to Deja Church on becoming a member of the 1,000 career points club!

Arbor Prep:

  • Ellie Taylor is still one of the best shooters in the state. When she’s knocking them down, the offense should make sure that she gets the ball.
  • Midland Dow must get tough, physically and mentally if they want to be a true contender for the state championship. Their body language said a lot.
