In game three of the 4th Annual Icebreaker the Bulldogs of Dearborn Heights Robichaud open their season against the Ann Arbor Huron River Rats. With both teams having two Division I commits, everyone knew that it would be a great game.

The first quarter was full of both teams battling in the paint and going basket for basket literally. When the final buzzer for the quarter sounded, they were tied 16-16. Huron started to take advantage of their inside advantage, feeding the ball to junior post Shamim Wambere and taking a 9 point lead. Robichaud fought back and finished the quarter strong. At halftime, Huron held just a mere 2 point advantage.

At the start of the half, it would appear as though the River Rats had maintained their momentum and would continue to dominate the boards and the paint. That would be very short lived and the Bulldogs would come with full force. With a dazzling performance from senior guard Kamaria McDaniel, Robichaud took a ten point lead and never looked back. They turned up the defense with a full court press and took Huron completely out of their game. Despite noble efforts, the River Rats could not get the lead down to less than 6 and the Bulldogs took the win.

Leading scorers: Robichuad: McDaniel 36, Palmer 13, Brown 12/11 rebounds; AA Huron: Marsh 16, Wambere 14, Wilson 10

Game and Team Highlights

Robichaud:

  • After a slow start the Bulldogs defense really stepped up and won the game for them. Once they work out a few kinks, they will be a powerful force.
  • Robichaud’s big three stepped up big. All three were in double digits including a career high 36 points from McDaniel and a double-double from Brown. Brown also joined the 1,000 career points club today.

Ann Arbor Huron:

  • The River Rats went cold offensively and it countered their very intense efforts on defense. They must receive consistent scoring from their key plays to have a successful season.
  • Huron did a good job of feeding the ball to Shamim Wambere. She played big and did a nice job of snatching down rebounds and getting second chance shots.
