After Detroit Renaissance claimed a seat in the Detroit Public School League (DPSL) championship game after defeating Mumford 81-57, they were anxious to see who they would be facing. Although they had a hunch, the first five minutes of the second semi-final game had them a little unsure. Detroit M.L. King faced off against Detroit Henry Ford and the Crusaders didn’t look like themselves. For about four minutes, the score seams stuck on 4-2. However after an old fashion three from Depaul commit Michaela Kelly, the Crusaders went on an 11-0 run and ended the quarter leading 16-4. Things would not change much leading up to the halfway mark, and in the third quarter. King would turn up the pressure and before anyone knew it, they were up by 20. Henry Ford had the speed and athleticism to keep up with King, but could not convert on the offensive end. Tia Tedford opened up the fourth quarter with a nothing but net three for the Crusaders and that would be all she wrote. Tedford would go on to knock down three more long distance shots and King would dominate the rest of the game, winning 73-36.

Leading the way for King and the game was Michaela Kelly with 24 points. Teammates Alicia Norman would finish with 17 points and Tia Tedford with 12. Williams led the Trojans with 10 points.

Game and Team Highlights

Henry Ford:

  • The Trojans often did not get back on defense and that hurt them. Most of King’s points were in transition.

  • Henry Ford gave all they had. Even after the lead grew to 20+, they kept playing. That’s really hard to do.

M.L. King:

  • King was very explosive. Their speed was often unbelievable and they never seemed to get tired.

  • Michaela Kelly played fearless and with a lot of heart. No one could stop her and she was not afraid of contact.
