Southfield, MI - In a game that featured two of the state’s best teams in Class A & Class B, Lathrup squared off against the defending Class B state champs the Country Day Yellow Jackets for the last time due to the closing of Lathrup this coming June.

With all the hype surrounding this game, it looked like the Chargers would run away with this highly anticipated matchup when they jumped out to a 13-3 lead behind the stellar play of junior guard Deja Church. Freshman Jasmine Powell of Country Day would give them a huge three point basket near the end of the first quarter and the Yellow Jackets only trailed by 4 at the end of the 1st quarter.

In the 2nd quarter Destiny Pitts of Country Day showed many fans in attendance why she’s one of the best players in the class of 2017 as she would score 16 points in the quarter to give Country Day a 35-27 lead at the break.

The teams played even in the 3rd quarter; both teams would trade baskets as neither could get any defensive stops. Country Day would head into the 4th quarter holding a 47-38 lead.

Deja Church would help lead the Chargers on a 7-0 run to cut Country Day’s lead down to 47- 45. With the game tied at 51 all with just under a minute remaining, Pitts would strike again hitting the go ahead 3 pointer to give her team the lead for good and they would hang on for the 56-52 victory. Destiny Pitts led Country Day with 23 points while sophomore Kaela Webb chipped in with 10 points. Lathrup’s Deja Church had a game 28 points.

Game and Team Highlights

Country Day:

  • Country Day showed there maturity when they got behind early but continued to fight.

  • Country Day played great full court pressure defense that caused a lot of turnovers in the 2nd quarter. That allowed them to get out in transition for easy baskets.

Southfield Lathrup:

  • The Chargers gave up too many offensive rebounds this afternoon. This team is too big and athletic not to be able to hold teams to one shot.

  • Besides Church, the Chargers didn’t get any production from their other key players. If the Chargers want to make a deep tournament run they must get more inside scoring.
