LBI’s 2016 Miss Basketball Preview

Michigan’s high school girls’ basketball season will tip off this week. Many of the state’s top seniors are looking to lead their teams to a state championship, but also can put themselves in position to win the prestigious Miss Basketball trophy. LBI takes a look at 6 potential candidates that could add there name to the Miss Michigan basketball list.

Mardrieka Cook  6’0”  Post  Muskegon HS
Signed with Michigan State

Why she can win it: Cook will no doubt average a double-double this season. She’s too talented not to. The Big Reds finished last season with an 11-11 record which was a down year for them. If Cook could lead Muskegon to 17-18 wins and is still alive in the state tournament when the voting comes out, her chances of winning could increase. It also doesn’t hurt that she will be a future Spartan as 4 out of the past 6 Miss Basketball winners went on to play college basketball in East Lansing.

Siyeh Frazier  5’9”  Guard  Detroit Renaissance HS
Signed with Penn State

Why she can win it: Frazier is the best player in the Detroit PSL (Public School League). She definitely go on a scoring rampage at any moment as she did in last year’s district loss against Farmington Hills Mercy. While she will have the individual stats, she can really help her case by winning a PSL City Championship or a District title. If Frazier can add those things to an already impressive resume, she could become just the second player from the PSL to win the award.

Clare Glowniak  6’1”  Post  Flushing HS
Signed with Bowling Green

Why she can win it: This is the dark horse of this group that could win Miss Basketball. Glowniak is not great in one particular area, but she is very good in many. She can put up big numbers if needed but she tends to do whatever her team needs her to do and that is fill up the stat sheets. Being on a winning team is important and that is what Glowniak’s Flushing Raiders will be this year. The Raiders are very good that will be in the running for a Class A state title, which could help Clare get many more votes.

Kysre Gondrezick  5’9  Guard  Benton Harbor HS
Signed with Michigan

Why she can win it: Gondrezick can be seen as the front runner, as she has been on the national scene since the 7th grade. She averaged over 25 points per game last season while helping to lead Benton Harbor to a Class B Final 4 berth. Kysre will still put up huge numbers this season, but may need to lead her team to some impressive victories to show everyone that she’s more than just a scorer.

Antoinette Miller  5’7”  PG  Southfield Lathrup HS
Signed with Cincinnati

Why she can win it: Miller will be one of the main components for one of the top teams in the state of Michigan. She will be able to fill up the stat sheets with points and assists due to her having plenty of weapons around her. Miller will play a tough OAA league & non-conference schedule where she will do her damage against top competition night in and night out.

Jalisha Terry  5'7"  PG  Flint Hamady
Signed with St. Bonaventure

Why she can win it: Terry can be seen as a legitimate candidate as she is one of the few players that has won 20 plus games every year during her high school season and we all know that winning catches everyone’s attention. She was the key player for Flint Hamady as they made it to the Class C state championship game. Terry averaged close to 23 points per game last season and I don't see her slowing down during her last season in a Hawks jersey.
